The ritual of burning candles for religious ceremonies, magical rites or plain illumination is as old as the hills. Throughout recorded history, candles have been burned as a part of festivities, as an act of atonement, and to evoke supplication. If you have an on-going ceremony, let's say one for preserving a loving marriage, then you might want to place your primary candles, those of the people involved, inside jars. You can purchase special jar candle, but ordinary canning jars will suffice. When you have completed your rite, you can then keep the jar candle either on a shelf or in a safe place, as a constant reminder of the purpose of the ceremony.

The jar candle is actually one of the easiest to create. Metal core wicking, which is fairly rigid, should be used. Its end should be crimped into a small metal plate so that it will sit in the bottom center of the jar. Some sort of clip, such as a straightened paperclip, secures the wick in the center of the glass at the top. Now, pour about a half-inch of wax into the jar and allow it to coagulate. Check the straightness and centering of the wick, then pour in more wax to fill the jar within a half-inch of the top. Allow the wax to coalesce. When it's ready, check the area around the wick to make sure there are no cavities or air pockets. Top off with more wax if necessary. When all is set, remove the clip at the top, and trim the wick to a desirable length.
